Siccaridge Wood provides the perfect habitat for the rare dormice which scurry through the tree canopy, unless, of course, they are asleep! Dormice spend up to three quarters of their life sleeping and they hibernate when food is scarce to conserve energy. We will explore the woodland edges near the Daneway Inn, searching for nibbled hazelnuts and learning about the ecology of this rarely seen mammal. There is one stile and the walk will be steep in places and could be muddy.
Orchids are, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful flowers you’ll see. But why the huge diversity in colours and shapes? And how do they trick their insect pollinators to come and visit? All will be revealed! You will discover just how crafty orchids really are, find out about rostellum and viscidium, and learn why a fungus infection to an orchid is really quite wonderful! There is one steep climb and the ground could be muddy.
