Come and get your FREE pumpkin seed from the Stroud Valleys Project eco shop (8 Threadneedle St, Stroud) to join in with our annual Twilight Pumpkin Lantern Trail with the chance to win a prize for your carved, home-grown pumpkin.

You can also buy more than one seed from our eco shop to increase your chances of success!

There will be three categories: primary school children, secondary school children and family.

Badger Watch

Wednesday 22nd May 7pm – 9pmBadger

See local badgers in the daylight with expert Tony Dean during this enchanting event.  Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult but must be absolutely silent while we’re at the sett. We will be sitting on the grass so please bring something suitable to sit on.

We will be crossing one stile during the evening; the event is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users or for people with serious mobility problems.

There are no toilets or refreshments on site.

Cost: £4 adult/£3 child, or £2 adult/£1 child for Friends of Stroud Valleys Project

The Sleepy Dormouse Walk

Sunday 2 June: 10am - 1pm

Siccaridge Wood, Sapperton

Sleepy_DormouseSiccaridge Wood provides the perfect habitat for the rare dormice which scurry through the tree canopy, unless, of course, they are asleep! Dormice spend up to three quarters of their life sleeping and they hibernate when food is scarce to conserve energy. We will explore the woodland edges near the Daneway Inn, searching for nibbled hazelnuts and learning about the ecology of this rarely seen mammal. There is one stile and the walk will be steep in places and could be muddy.

Orchid Walk

Saturday 8 June: 6pm - 8pm. Green_Winged_Orchid

Edge Common (near Painswick)

Join this gentle stroll and admire the beautiful display of orchids and wildflowers found on Edge Common, a National Nature Reserve. The walk will be led by local naturalist Paul Griffiths, Natural England’s stockman and grazier at the reserve. We will hope to see five or six types of orchid and, if very lucky, we may catch a glimpse of the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly

Orchid Walk

And how do they trick their insect pollinators to come and visit? All will be revealed! You will discover just how crafty orchids really are, find out about rostellum and viscidium, and learn why a fungus infection to an orchid is really quite wonderful! There is one steep climb and the ground could be muddy.

Sponsored Bike Ride 2013

SVP Summer Bike Ride

Every year since it began our sponsored bike ride has raised in excess of £2,000 for the work of our charity.   Last year we had 80 participants which was brilliant and we’d like to have even more participants this year.  There is something for everyone in the sponsored bike ride – short, medium and long routes. This year’s bike ride will take place on Sunday 23rd June.

Fossil Hunt

Saturday 6 July: 2.30pm - 4.30pm _DSC6455

Hock Cliff, near Fretherne, River Severn

Join the Gloucestershire Geology Trust for a family-friendly guided walk to the shore of the River Severn to find fossils embedded in the mud shale. Particularly common finds here include Gryphea (‘devil’s toenails’), ammonites, brachiopods and bivalves in the mud and stones below the cliff. This is a popular event, which is suitable for children. However, it can be a muddy and slippery, so good shoes or boots are essential.

Tree Walk

Sunday 7 July: 10am - 1pm
Slade Woods, Stroud

Do all the trees look the same to you? Do your tree identification skills stop at beech, birch and…uhm, holly? Well, fret not! After this walk you will be able to use different leaf shapes to recognise lots more trees. You can impress your future walking buddies by throwing around terms such as axillary buds, and you’ll be able to navigate your way around trifoliate, pinnate and palmate leaves.

There is one stile and the walk will be steep in places and could be muddy.

Glow-worm Walk and Talk

Friday 12 July: 7.30pm - 10.00pm

Learn about the fascinating lives of glow-worms and fireflies at this illustrated talk and walk with a local specialist. The talk will be followed by a walk at nightfall in Old Stroud where we should see the bright lights of female glow-worms in their natural habitat. The walk is along tarmac paths in the dark, so please bring a small torch and warm clothes. This walk is not suitable for small children.

Pumpkins and Apples in the Park

Workshops for all ages take place at 11am-12.30pm and 2pm-3pm.

Bring your own apples and a clean container for your juice.

Then join us for the annual Twilight Pumpkin Lantern Trail with the chance to win a prize for your carved, home-grown pumpkin.

There will be three categories: primary school children, secondary school children and family.

Drop off your pumpkin at the Museum in the Park’s courtyard by 3.30pm for a chance to win.

The trail and judging takes place at 5.30pm.
