Anti-litter action strikes a chord with young eco-warrior

Seven-year-old Daisy says she’s proud to be supporting Stroud Valleys Project and the Great British Litter Pick.

In the UK alone, 30 million tonnes of litter are dropped every year, with £1 billion of taxes spent on litter picking annually.

This April, Stroud Valleys Project are joining forces with Stroud District Council and the people of Stroud to clean our valleys, fields and streets as part of the Great British Spring Clean with Keep Britain Tidy – and they’ve got one local supporter who’s already helping them in their mission.

Daisy, who is seven and lives in Stroud, has been a keen litter-buster for months – she even requested her own litter-grab for Christmas! She took part in a recent litter-pick in Stonehouse, and she’s set herself a challenge to fill three bin bags with rubbish.

“When I litter pick, I’m picking up litter that could hurt animals,” explains Daisy. “It’s fun to get out and do something good. I like seeing how much rubbish I can get in the time I’ve estimated – it's like a game!”

Dairy is also a keen Brownie, and when she had to pick a local charity to tell people about to earn one of her badges, she chose Stroud Valleys Project.

“Stroud Valleys Project is great because they help the environment and they are getting a lot of people together to do it!” says Daisy.

If you’ve been inspired by Daisy to help make our local area a nicer place to live, join Stroud Valleys Project and Stroud District Council this Sunday and next to rid our streets of the scourge of litter.

Come to our eco shop on Threadneedle Street on Sunday 3rd and/or Sunday 10th April from 10am to 2pm. If you’re not like Daisy and don’t have your own litter picker, we can provide these and high-vis vests (returnable deposit required).

Our own Tash Fletcher, who’s running the event, says “Bring your own gloves and smaller disposable bags as they are easier to handle. We’ll provide bin bags and an area map, so you can go forth into town and the surrounding countryside and litter pick to your heart’s content!

“Once you’ve had your fill, you can drop your litter pickers and bags back at the SVP eco shop.

“All bags of litter will be counted and results submitted to the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.
