Archaeology Walk of the Heavens (8.3.25)

All our Archaeology Walks are now fully booked.

Since 2011, archaeologist Neil Baker has been exploring this area to the south of Stroud. His Heavens Archaeological Research Project (HARP) has uncovered secrets of Stroud’s rich industrial heritage that have been lying under this beautiful landscape.

Join Neil for a guided walk as he reveals the Heavens’ hidden history of weavers, millers and clothiers; you’ll never see things in the same way once you know about the mills and homesteads that once dotted this ancient landscape.

The walk will take 3 hours or so and the route is hilly, uneven and muddy in places, so stout footwear and a basic level of fitness are required.

Dogs are allowed, but they must be controlled and kept on a lead at all times.

If you would like a child ticket rather than an adult, these are £5. Please call 01453 753358 during office hours and we can make these available for you.

Neil is very kindly running this walk on nine occasions this winter, as a joint fundraiser with the Heavens Valley Action Group, who are raising money to buy the land for the people of Stroud. Find out more about the Heavens Valley Action Group here.

Heavens Helpers

The Heavens area of Stroud has been the subject of a community campaign and it is now in public ownership. Its new owners, the people of Stroud, are getting together to improve the area’s footpaths so everyone can access the Heavens more easily. You can find full details here on the Heavens Valley Action group website.

We’ll be working with the Heavens Valley Action Group to deliver two volunteering days on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 February, and we’re inviting people to book a place here.

We’ll cut back vegetation overgrowing some of the most heavily used and overgrown routes, focusing particularly on the path down from the Cemetery, from Highfields, and at the Bowbridge entrance at the bottom of Gunhouse Lane.

You will be sent full details including timings by email after you book your place. There’s a back-up date of Monday 17 February in case of inclement weather.

This is a free event, but we’re asking people to book so we can run the event safely.

Jackdaw Spectacular - DATE CHANGE

WE HAVE CHANGED THE DATE DUE TO THE WEATHER FORECAST. THIS EVENT WAS DUE TO TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY 26 JAN - IT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY 2 FEB.

Come and join us to witness the amazing winter roosting of the Jackdaws in Stratford Park. Local ecologist David Bullock will give us an insight into their habits and do his best to answer any questions you might have.

Jackdaws are almost always in pairs, and you can pick couples out even they are flying in flocks of hundreds of birds – a beautiful, albeit noisy, sight to behold.

We’ll be making the most of both technology and old-fashioned pen and paper, as we go live to plot the movement of these ornithological disruptors.

Ecologists from all over the Stroud valleys will be calling in to let us know how many Jackdaws are flying in, from where, and at what time, so we can live track their journey.

Come join us for a Citizen Science experiment in action!
